Scoliosis Stretches

What Is Scoliosis?

Typically, the spine would appear straight, like a stack of rectangular blocks. However, people with scoliosis tend to have a curved spine. A spine with scoliosis can appear like a “C’” or “S”-shaped curve, depending on the patient. A person with scoliosis may look like they’re leaning on one side or have a higher risk of being out of balance.

The cause of scoliosis is yet to be found. Some cases show that scoliosis may develop due to spinal disc degeneration. This is found in other hereditary conditions such as osteoporosis and arthritis. Scoliosis is more common among children above 11 years of age.

What Are the Types of Scoliosis?

The following are the three common types of scoliosis:

Structural Scoliosis

Structural scoliosis is rigid and difficult to correct. A change in posture cannot treat this kind of scoliosis.

Postural Scoliosis

Postural Scoliosis is considered a more flexible kind of deformity caused by the wrong positioning of the spine.

Idiopathic Scoliosis

The cause of this kind of scoliosis is still unknown and is still being studied at the time of writing.

Can Stretching Help Scoliosis?

Scoliosis stretches can help with mild cases of scoliosis. With the right exercises for scoliosis, one can do away with surgery and help relieve some symptoms. However, these exercises should be done with the guidance of a physical therapist or a doctor. These exercises should also be highly personalized based on the patient’s condition.

Typically, the proper scoliosis exercises should be based upon the curve’s location. For instance, you should exercise your lower back more if you have lumbar scoliosis. If you have thoracic scoliosis, focus on your upper back.
