Breast Cancer Survivor Spotlight: Meet Majoice Thomas

Support breast cancer awareness by learning more about Majoice Thomas, a cancer survivor and Horton’s client.

Majoice Thomas has many remarkable accomplishments as a wife, mother, grandmother, and educator. Horton’s Orthotics & Prosthetics is proud to support breast cancer awareness by sharing Majoice’s story.

Majoice is living proof that breast cancer should not prevent you from making an impact in other people’s lives. As a Spanish teacher in North Little Rock, she influenced countless students through her 17 years of thoughtful instruction before retiring in 2013. Majoice has also touched the lives of her loving family, including Bill, her husband of nearly 50 years, and their children and grandchildren.

When asked what advice she would give to other women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, Majoice said, “It is your attitude that will make the difference. Remain positive!” Horton’s Orthotics & Prosthetics fosters this same spirit of positivity by providing lifelike breast forms, breast prosthesis bras, and other post-mastectomy products to patients like Majoice.

With help from Horton’s compassionate and helpful staff, Majoice has been able to lead an active life and wear the clothing that makes her feel stylish and confident. “At this point in my life, my goal is to live the best life possible and to live the life God has ordained for me,” she said. “As far as Horton’s helping, I guess I can say the best is yet to come!”

Want to learn more about Majoice? Read her answers to our questions below.

Can you give us a glimpse into your life story?

I was born in a small town in Missouri but lived most of my life in the midwestern part of Illinois. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Bill, for almost 50 years. We have two amazing children—a daughter, Anjanette, and a son, Marcus—and four awesome grandchildren. I am a teacher by training, a Spanish teacher to be exact. I taught for 17 years at the high school in North Little Rock, Arkansas, before retiring in 2013.

What are some of your favorite activities, hobbies, or interests?

As a retired educator, I keep active by serving as the current president of the North Little Rock School District Retired Employees Association. I also serve as a test administrator and substitute teacher from time to time. My interests and hobbies include gardening, walking, working out, biking, and creating paintings in adult coloring books.

What are some of your proudest life accomplishments?

My three proudest educational accomplishments are chartering a chapter of the National Spanish Honor Society at my high school, being awarded the Butler-Cooley Excellence in Teaching Award, and being a Fulbright-Hays Scholar for Japanese language study in Japan. More personally, I have been extremely blessed to have a strong and supportive network of family and friends. And even more personally, it is indeed an accomplishment in this day and age to have remained married for soon to be 50 years!

Why is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month important to you?

October is personally meaningful to me because it was about this time 20 years ago that I went for my regularly scheduled annual check-up and mammogram. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 1996. I believe in being proactive when it comes to my health, so I continue to attend regular check-ups, do self-breast examinations, and get my mammograms.

Which post-mastectomy products do you use?

By opting not to undergo breast reconstruction, I knew I needed a breast form and bras that would appear as natural as possible underneath my clothes. I used an adhesive-backed form for many years, and I have recently switched to a pocket-type breast prosthesis bra and form.

Why did you choose Horton’s?

Twenty years ago, the breast form industry was a work in progress. Over the years, I have tried several different breast forms with varying success. Since I have been with Horton’s, I have been able to choose and wear a breast form that fits my lifestyle, thanks to Horton’s expert fitters.

How do post-mastectomy products impact your everyday life?

Being a fairly active person who chooses to wear stylish clothing, I needed to feel comfortable with the breast form, and the bra had to fit well. The products I have chosen suit my lifestyle and enhance my choice of clothing.
