Fashion Guide to Shopping With a Scoliosis Brace

When it comes to hitting the mall for new clothes, young women with scoliosis want to be on trend just as much as their friends do. But don’t despair — fun, flattering clothes are out there, and shopping can be fun once you learn a few basics!

Between the way in which your body may be developing due to scoliosis, as well as the scoliosis back brace you wear, it’s helpful to remember a few basic guidelines that promote visual balance and overall comfort. With just a little ingenuity, you’ll soon find outfits that complement your body — and your own fabulous style!

Finding the Balance

The good news is that clothes can be fashionable while also accommodating scoliosis-specific factors, such as a tendency to lean to one side; a slightly off-center torso; uneven shoulders or hips; or one leg that’s shorter than the other.

To counter body asymmetry, look for clothes that are themselves fashionably off-center. Uneven hems on long blouses, vests and dresses are all the rage. Likewise, seek out off-the-shoulder, slouchy sweaters and jerseys, as well as asymmetrical collars and necklines.

An artfully-arranged scarf can also draw the eye away from uneven shoulders, while large purses visually balance out uneven hips. A slouchy, off-center belt can also achieve this effect.

Think Body-Skimming, Not Form-Fitting

The same fashionable pieces that are so perfect for layering will also skim easily over your brace. On warm days, slip a colorful tank over your brace before topping it with one or two larger tanks, in contrasting colors. In cooler weather, add a long knit sweater, or an unbuttoned flannel top.

To visually de-emphasize both curvature and bracing, focus on loose-fitting blouses and tunics, as well as stretchable leggings and pants. These pieces will provide visual camouflage where you want it, as well as comfortably accommodate your scoliosis brace in Arkansas.

Fashionista Brace Options Are Here!

Perhaps because thoracolumbosacral (TLSO) braces are extremely common for scoliosis patients, this type of device is among the first to have gone high-fashion. The lighter weight and lack of bulk of a TLSO brace also lends itself to customization for young women who want to express themselves and their own unique sense of style.

TLSO (also known as the underarm or Boston brace) braces are customized to accommodate the wearer’s specific measurements. Why not also take the opportunity to personalize the brace to fit your fashion style? The newest lines of TLSOs are available in a range of colors and patterns.
